Pink October: Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Kampala

“On International Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Kampala, Sudanese women came together in solidarity, courage, and hope. Through dialogue on early detection, self-care, and home examination, the event created a safe space to confront fear, share experiences, and empower one another. Organizers emphasized that awareness is the first step toward prevention, and that no woman should face breast cancer alone-collective knowledge, support, and compassion can transform fear into strength and hope.”

On the occasion of the International Breast Cancer Awareness Day, four leading organizations – the African Organization for Rights and Development, the Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy, the Nubatia Organization for Sustainable Development, and the Al-Dar Organization for Women and Children’s Rights Development – organized a special awareness event at the AFORD office in Kampala.

This initiative reflected a shared commitment to supporting women and raising awareness of a disease that remains one of the most pressing global health challenges. It specifically targeted Sudanese women living in Kampala, who face the compounded burdens of displacement, daily struggles, and the urgent need for knowledge and preventive health practices.

The program featured a coffee session highlighting the importance of early detection, self-care practices, and regular home examinations. It concluded with a seminar addressing the psychological and social challenges that accompany fear of the disease or the decision to undergo screening.

The event went beyond awareness-it created a safe space for women to share experiences and voice their concerns, underscoring that awareness is the first step toward prevention, and that solidarity and community support form a vital shield against the disease.

Organizers emphasized that this day was not only about sharing information, but also about renewing a message of hope: no woman should face breast cancer alone. Knowledge can turn fear into strength, and struggle into an opportunity for empowerment and prevention.
