Sudan: UN Human Rights Chief Alarmed by Summary Executions and Civilian Attacks

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed deep alarm over reports of summary executions of civilians in Khartoum North by fighters and militia affiliated with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Verified information indicates that at least 18 people, including a woman, were killed in separate incidents since 25 January, many of them originally from Darfur and Kordofan.

Disturbing video footage also shows SAF soldiers and members of the Al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade reading out names of alleged RSF collaborators and declaring them “killed.” Türk stressed that such killings constitute war crimes and called for urgent independent investigations.

At the same time, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue attacks on civilians in Darfur. On 29 January, shelling on Abu Shouk camp in El Fasher killed nine civilians, while a drone strike days earlier on Al-Saudi Maternity Hospital left at least 67 dead and destroyed its emergency unit – the only specialized hospital in the city.

“Deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are abhorrent and must end immediately,” Türk said, warning that ongoing violence risks further atrocities and mass displacement across Sudan.
