Workshop Strengthens Sudanese Human Rights Defenders Ahead of UN Human Rights Council Session
February 18, 2025 – Kampala, Uganda
The Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy (NCPD), in collaboration with its partners, including the African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies, launched a two-day workshop on the human rights situation in Sudan at the Human Rights House in Kampala. The workshop brought together Sudanese human rights and humanitarian activists, both in person and virtually, to prepare for the 58th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, scheduled from February 24 to April 4, 2025.

The workshop aimed to strengthen coordination with regional and international human rights mechanisms, provide practical insights into upcoming UN reports on Sudan, and equip participants with tools to develop effective advocacy strategies. Youth, women, and civil society representatives actively engaged in discussions on accountability, justice, and strategies to prevent further atrocities and violations.

On the first day, participants explored the mandates of the UN Human Rights Council mechanisms, reviewed previous reports, and examined the Council’s agenda. They also focused on the upcoming Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) report on Sudan, due to be presented on February 27 (Report No. 58-29).
In his opening remarks, Mr. Abdelbagi Jibril, Representative of the African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies and the Sudanese Knowledge Center in Geneva, stressed the importance of coordinated efforts and solidarity to protect the fundamental rights of vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

The Sudanese people are facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world,” said the Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy (NCPD). “This workshop is a vital step in empowering defenders and civil society to advocate for justice, accountability, and the protection of civilians.”
The workshop highlighted the pivotal role of Sudanese human rights defenders in raising international awareness, ensuring accountability for violations, and amplifying the voices of those affected by the ongoing conflict.
