Entebbe Meeting with the Norwegian Ambassador: Sudan’s Agony and the Hope for Peace

“In Entebbe, Sudanese voices echoed with pain and resilience before the Norwegian Ambassador-stories of hunger, displacement, and shattered lives, yet also of unbroken hope. Women and children, bearing the heaviest burden of war, called for urgent protection, humanitarian relief, and justice. The meeting carried a clear message to the world: act now to save lives, open corridors of aid, and stand with Sudanese civilians in their pursuit of peace and dignity.”

On December 5, 2024, in the city of Entebbe, Uganda, His Excellency John Anton Johnson, the Norwegian Ambassador to Sudan, met with a broad group of Sudanese civil society representatives, women and youth leaders, resistance committees, and political party members.

The meeting, coordinated by the Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy, was more than a formal gathering-it was a human space where Sudanese voices could be heard, raw and urgent, telling stories of pain, endurance, and the unwavering hope for a better future.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan on April 5, 2023, millions of civilians have been trapped in a spiraling humanitarian crisis. Women and children bear the brunt of this catastrophe, facing hunger, displacement, gender-based violence, and the psychological scars of a conflict that spares no one.

Voices from the Heart of the Crisis

Participants shared harrowing accounts of life under siege. Families struggling to survive without adequate food, access to healthcare, or safe shelter. Children fearful of the next attack. Women facing sexual violence, forced displacement, and trauma that extends beyond the battlefield.

Speakers emphasized the urgent need for special protection for women and children, psychosocial support for survivors, and immediate humanitarian relief reaching those in the most dangerous areas. They called on the world to witness and respond to the depth of suffering unfolding in Sudan.

Urgent Calls to the International Community

The meeting sent a resounding message: the international community must act swiftly. Safe humanitarian corridors must be established, emergency aid delivered without obstruction, and all parties must commit to an immediate ceasefire to protect civilians. Participants also stressed the need for accountability for those responsible for crimes against humanity and urged sustained diplomatic pressure to bring warring parties to the negotiating table.

Norway’s Commitment to Sudan

Ambassador Johnson reaffirmed Norway’s unwavering support for the Sudanese people. He stressed that a lasting resolution can only come through political dialogue and peacebuilding, and that the resilience and solidarity of Sudanese communities, both inside and outside the country, are vital to achieving lasting change.
