“The New Way” Newspaper: Empowering Sudanese Displaced Persons and Refugees

“Through The New Way, the Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy seeks to restore dignity and voice to millions of Sudanese uprooted by war. At a time when families are torn apart, women and children face unimaginable hardship, and communication lines are deliberately silenced, this newspaper becomes more than a publication—it is a lifeline. It empowers displaced persons and refugees with truth, hope, and the tools to engage in shaping a just and peaceful future for Sudan.”

The Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy (NCPD) launched a bi-monthly newspaper called “The New Way”, carrying the slogan “Towards Democracy”, with the mission of providing reliable information and amplifying the voices of Sudanese displaced persons and refugees.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan on April 15, 2023, over 16 million Sudanese have been displaced internally and across neighboring countries. Internally displaced persons face severe communication barriers due to telecommunications and internet shutdowns imposed by warring parties, while refugees in Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Chad have access to communication tools but lack accurate and timely information about conditions in their homeland and ongoing international peace efforts. This has created a significant gap between displaced populations, their families, and peacebuilding initiatives.
Most of these refugees are women, girls, and children, living in harsh conditions with limited resources and scarce information. The conflict has triggered an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, affecting not only the physical well-being of Sudanese people but also disrupting their social fabric and access to essential services.

The Role of “The New Way”

“The New Way” newspaper strives to:
– Provide accurate and timely information about ongoing international efforts to end the war and achieve peace in Sudan.
– Advocate for the rights and concerns of displaced persons and refugees, highlighting their suffering and human rights violations.
– Promote values of peace, democracy, human rights, and coexistence among Sudanese communities.
– Combat hate speech and racism, while fostering messages of tolerance, reconciliation, and community dialogue.
– Cover the activities of Sudanese institutions and civil society organizations working to stop the war and support peace and stability.

By bridging the information gap, the newspaper empowers displaced persons and refugees to make informed decisions, voice their concerns, and actively participate in peacebuilding efforts, ensuring their experiences and perspectives shape the path toward a stable and peaceful Sudan.
