With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the Nubian Centre for Peace and Democracy addresses the tragic loss of Sudanese refugees at sea, a tragedy that shakes the conscience of humanity.
Last Sunday, a boat carrying 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off the coast of Libya, resulting in the death of at least fifty innocent lives. These are not mere statistics; they represent dreams cut short, families shattered, and lives extinguished in pursuit of hope and safety. These refugees were fleeing a war in Sudan that they neither chose nor provoked-a brutal conflict that has turned their homeland into a landscape of despair.
They were not migrants by choice; they were human beings forced by circumstance to risk everything for a chance at survival. Driven by desperation, they embarked on a perilous journey across the Mediterranean, only to meet a devastating fate. Their loss is yet another grim reminder of the human cost of conflicts left unchecked.
We hold the parties to the Sudanese conflict fully accountable for this tragedy. Continued fighting and the refusal to heed calls for a ceasefire push innocent civilians into the hands of smugglers, exposing them to unimaginable dangers on land and at sea. The blood of these victims cries out against all who perpetuate this war.
We urgently call on the regional and international community-including the United Nations and the Human Rights Council-to move beyond statements of concern. Immediate action is required to pressure the warring parties in Sudan to halt hostilities, return to meaningful negotiations, and commit to a just and comprehensive peace that restores the right of all Sudanese to live in safety and dignity.
We also demand a transparent and independent international investigation into the circumstances of this tragedy, with accountability for those responsible. Countries of transit and destination must approach the refugee crisis with a humanitarian lens, offering protection and support rather than leaving vulnerable people to face an uncertain fate at sea.
Our deepest condolences go to the families of the victims, and we wish strength and recovery to the survivors of this ordeal. We stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that such tragedies are neither forgotten nor repeated.
Silence in the face of such crimes is complicity. Let the world act before more innocent lives are claimed by the sea.
