Sudan’s Child Rape and Sexual Violence Crisis: An Urgent Call for Protection
“In Sudan, the April 2023 conflict has exposed children to widespread sexual violence, displacement, and famine. UNICEF’s report highlights the harrowing experiences of girls and boys, amplifying their voices and calling for urgent protection. All parties to the conflict bear responsibility. The international community must act swiftly to provide life-saving support, strengthen child protection mechanisms, and ensure that every child can live free from sexual violence, fear, and abuse.”
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan, triggered by the April 2023 conflict, has brought displacement, famine, and disease to the forefront of global attention. However, a less visible yet devastating tragedy persists: the widespread sexual violence against children.
The UNICEF report, “Sudan’s Child Rape and Sexual Violence Crisis,” revealed the alarming scale of violations targeting children. All parties to the conflict have been accused of grave human rights abuses. Children, especially girls, have faced severe sexual violence, with limited access to protection and humanitarian assistance.
The report amplifies the voices of courageous and resilient women and girls who shared their experiences with UNICEF, aiming to raise awareness, strengthen protection mechanisms, and ensure life-saving support reaches children in need.
UNICEF emphasizes that no child-and no person-should endure such horrors and calls on the international community to act urgently to safeguard children and uphold their fundamental rights.
