Kampala – November 7, 2024
The U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Mr. Tom Perriello, praised the strength, courage, and vision of Sudanese women, stressing that their leadership is a cornerstone in efforts to achieve peace and democracy in Sudan. Perriello stated: “Never underestimate the strength, courage, and vision of Sudanese women. In Kampala, I once again met with a coalition of women representing all 18 states, including activists from Blue Nile, the Nuba Mountains, Nyala, Khartoum, Kassala, and Al-Jazira. These networks are working for dignity, justice, and freedom for all Sudanese.”

The envoy’s remarks came during a meeting with several Sudanese women activists based in Uganda, where participants highlighted the enormous challenges women face amid the ongoing war, as well as their roles in documenting violations, supporting local communities, and building initiatives for reconciliation and peace.

This meeting reflects the vital and growing role of women in leading civil efforts and advocating for an end to violence, with their voices serving as a source of strength and hope for change in Sudan. The U.S. envoy further affirmed his country’s commitment to supporting the efforts of Sudanese women both inside the country and in the diaspora, in recognition of their determination to defend the values of dignity, justice, and freedom.
