On January 10, 2025, the Sudanese refugee community at Beyale’s Kiryandongo Settlement came together in a vibrant celebration of Sudan’s Independence Day, demonstrating resilience, unity, and cultural pride despite the hardships of displacement.

The event began with a series of musical and dance performances representing Sudan’s rich ethnic and geographical diversity. These cultural expressions not only entertained but also strengthened the bonds of solidarity among refugees, emphasizing the power of art in fostering hope and resilience. Elderly members of the community were particularly honored through dedicated activities, acknowledging their enduring spirit and wisdom.

The program also featured theatrical performances that highlighted critical issues such as social peace, security, and the rejection of hate speech within the community. Performances in multiple Sudanese languages further celebrated the cultural richness and diversity of the refugees, bringing the camp alive with laughter, music, and movement.

A particularly heartfelt moment was the welcome of Sudanese students who had recently completed their exams in Kampala. Families and the broader community gathered to celebrate their achievements, instilling pride, hope, and inspiration among peers and younger generations.

In recognition of community efforts, several Sudanese civil society organizations, including People for People and Awareness Organization, were honored for their contributions to the camp. Prominent figures, including Engineer Hussein, Head of the Sudanese Refugee Office, and Mr. Ajab from the Youth Office, were also acknowledged for their dedication. The Director of Uganda’s Office of the Prime Minister addressed the gathering, congratulating the Sudanese refugees on their national day, reaffirming Uganda’s welcome, and pledging continued support to improve living conditions, security, and protection for all camp residents.

The celebration was a powerful testament to the strength, unity, and cultural pride of Sudanese refugees, illustrating how community and shared heritage can inspire hope, resilience, and optimism even in the most challenging circumstances.
